The importance of oral narration extends to genealogy, with generations of lineage transmitted orally, even today. Throughout the classic Islamic period, genealogy was a heavily studied science in its own right, with thousands of volumes published of biographies & genealogies.  

Why do I dwell on the heritage of oral narration & genealogy?

With modern mass manufactured goods, the record is there from the start, the barcodes, batch numbers, manufacturers - the whole lot. 

With artisanal oud, things could not be more different. Core to the tradition of oud is the ageing of oils and building of collections, with oils spanning entire generations of family. With such oils passed down within families, there is so much to apply from the the principles of narration & genealogy.
